Tee Hee.  Saw this problem on a sparc 10 when I did the same sorta thing.

It looks to me like the console getty is at the wrong baud rate.

Try editing /etc/ttys file, turning off all gettys, except the one you
are using to do this from, and HUP'ing init.  Then look to see if there
are any stray getty's about (there shouldnt be, but just in case) and
killing them also.  Then re-editing /etc/ttys and turning on the gettys
again.

rebooting did fix it...
