patch 112233-12 won't install properly under solaris 9 on SB1000

Hi,

I've been trying to install a recent Solaris 9 patch cluster on my SB1000
and the 112233-12 kernel patch won't install.

Running 'sh ./install_cluster', or running patchadd manually using
'patchadd ./112233-12', from the directory in which I've unzipped the
9_Recommended.zip cluster distribution file, produces an error saying one
or more packages that the patch requires to be present are not installed.

I couldn't work out a way to get patchadd to tell me exactly which
packages it's claiming aren't installed.

I manually compared the list of packages the patch patches against
with 'pkginfo' gives me, and it looks ok, but it's possible that some of
the package filenames are not what I'm expecting. For example, the patch
wants to apply patches to packages such as SUNWcarx.u, but SUNWcarx
already exists on the system.

Another example is the kvm packages. The patch has files to patch
SUNWkvm.c, SUNWkvm.d, SUNWkvm.m, SUNWkvm.u and SUNkvm.us. I'm aware that
the c, d, m, and u variants are the sparc CPU family-specific kvm packages
(and I think the .us one is the USA-specific one with the 'special'
encryption support), however pkginfo only reports that SUNWkvm and
SUNWkvmx are already installed so the system already has full 32-bit and
64-bit kvm packages.

Anyway that's digressing. The other Solaris 9 kernel patch (118558)
installed without a problem - it's just 112233 which won't. The system
seems to be running fine despite the 112233-12 patch not being installed,
though it's probably exposing the system to some kernel level security
issues.

Any ideas on what would be better way to see why the 112233-12 patch won't
install?

Thanks,

Craig.

Maybe the error message you got was misleading or wrong, but if you
could install 118558 than 112233 should already be installed, as it's
required by 118558. There are four kernel patches for Solaris 9:

   $ pca -l all -p Kernel
Patch IR CR RSB Age Synopsis
   ------ -- - -- --- --- ---------------------------------------------
   112233 12 = 12 RS- 999 SunOS 5.9: Kernel Patch
   117171 17 = 17 R-- 959 SunOS 5.9: Kernel Patch
   118558 39 = 39 RS- 239 SunOS 5.9: Kernel Patch
   122300 12 = 12 RS- 16 SunOS 5.9: Kernel Patch

Each of them requires all the previous kernel patches, otherwise it
won't install. Go and get pca:

   wget http://www.par.univie.ac.at/solaris/pca/pca
   chmod +x pca

and run "./pca" or "./pca -l all -p Kernel" to see what you're actually
missing.
