servicing DLT-8000 drive in a Sun L9 tape array - what's out there

Hi,

The DLT-8000 in my L9 tape array has started to run really s-l-o-w and I
suspect it's in serious need of servicing (or simple replacing with a good
DLT-8000 while it's serviced).

Are there any service kits around for DLT-8000's supplied either by Sun or
generic kits from HP (who make the L9's) or Quantum (who make the DLT
drives)?

Are there any online guides provided by Sun for servicing DLT drives?

Craig.

If this is not a business kit or otherwise it matters to you to save a
lot of money,
you may do like I did.

In general DLT drives suffer of head wear, mostly if they are running
in an environment
where the air is not filtered and conditioned. Dust particles tend to
cause premature head wear.

1) test your drive timing it to dump and restore a 10GB file.
2) give a good clean to the drive using an air compressor. Their built
is quite sturdy, therefore if handlded carefully, there is little risk
of damage doing so.
3) remove the head, clean it with a cotton fioc (cotton stick for
ears) dipped in alchool and ispect it for wear.

4) test your drive again as at point (1), if things have improved you
are OK otherwise:
5) source on eBay a DLT8000, it is easy to find those with little use
or heads still in good state.
Desktop models are to favour as in general have a lower usage rate.
6) replace your drive's head with that of the drive purchased and
repeat point 1). This time it should be really OK.

Replacing the head is not difficult, just be careful not to tear the
flat cable.
