Hi I am using LaTeX to write up my dissertation already against the mild disapproval of my thesis supervisor. He would like me override many LaTeX defaults which I am quite happy to do. However, he insists that I change my style of writing from using first person to third person and from active to passive voice. I prefer to say "The reasons for my choice of this particular dataset are..." and he prefers the safer "The reasons for this particular choice of dataset are...". I am sure that although that style was quite popular some 10 years ago, it is quite dated now. However, I don't have much ammunition by way of recent style manuals for Computer Science dissertations to argue for this. Any pointers that help me find them will be greatly appreciated. Further, I find that LaTeX does not do widow/orphan protection --- there are even widow/orphan footnotes. While I am not too perturbed by this, I can see how this is going to be a source of another small disagreement. Many thanks. Email replies please. - &
