                    NSW NATIVE FORESTS IN THE BALANCE
The fate of New South Wales' remaining native forests was the subject of
an intensive series of negotiations last month between conservationists,
government, the timber industry and unions. This scientifically-based
Interim Assessment Process (IAP) represents the first real chance to break
the forests deadlock and give lasting protection to much of our remaining
forest biodiversity.

The draft IAP report is now out for PUBLIC CONSULTATION. The report 
identifies a conservation option, and several timber resource options, 
for each of eleven forest regions in NSW.


                             WHAT YOU CAN DO

1. Visit http://www.peg.apc.org/~nccnsw - the new Web site of the Nature
   Conservation Council of New South Wales - for more information about
   the forest campaign, and use the FREE ON-LINE FAX FORM to let NSW
   Premier Bob Carr know that the forests should be protected.

In your letter, please ask Mr Carr to:

  * Place all areas likely to be needed for a comprehensive, adequate and
    representative (CAR) forest reserve system under moratorium without
    delay. 

  * Create new National Parks this year to protect core areas of the
    future reserve system. 

  * Refuse demands from logging companies for contracts which would force
    the government to abandon promises of a CAR forest reserve system and
    sustainable management outside reserves.
