Perhaps in the USA, but not here in Australia.  Most of the people
I know who are active in doing something for the environment in any
capacity are apolitical - they're simply people who are concerned about
our impact on our environment.

Although I know communism doesn't work and disagree with it,
(environmental ideals did go out the window) I must contradict
your blatant mis-information.  Ever seen the pollution in Bangkok?
Democracy.  Citizens of Australia and the USA are among the highest
consumers and waste producers in the world on a per capita basis.
We exist in a throw away world that needs to change through education.  
We need to re-cycle more, conserve more, be energy efficient,
and look into alternative energy generation.

The Swiss are way ahead of all of us.
They recycle every possible item, have government programmes to
encourage energy efficiency, and have a sense of environmental
responsibility in their culture.  Public transport and small-motor
vehicles are highly subsidised, rubbish bins are smaller to reduce
landfill and increase recycling and composting.  You can even hire
solar and electric cars in many cities.

And we don't?  To see the results of democratic disregard, check out

River in Tasmania.  People need to be taught this is wrong.

In a way he is right - overpopulation is the real enemy of the environment
and society and government..

Too late - the average American citizen cares not at all about their
environment.  I've been there and asked many people.  How many
Americans have heard about Chirac's nuclear testing in the Pacific?
Few that I spoke to, yet it was as close to the US as it was to Sydney.
The general public in the USA don't want to hear news like that.
