Call for industry to reveal use of toxic insulation

ENVIRONMENT Minister Peter Garrett has urged the insulation industry to come 
forward with details of cheap imported insulation products said to contain a 
toxic chemical.

Mr Garrett, pictured, said Australian standards applied to all insulation 
materials and there was no provision for the use of any product that failed to 
meet those requirements.

He had discussed with the industry the issue of imported polyester insulation 
said to contain high levels of formaldehyde.

''It's very clear that the Australian standards that apply to all the insulation 
products under this program apply to polyester as well,'' he told Channel Seven 
yesterday. ''So there's no provision for any product that would be unsafe, that 
didn't meet the Australian standards.''

The fresh claim comes after the opposition accused Mr Garrett of ignoring 
repeated warnings of safety problems with the government's $3.7 billion 
household insulation program.

Four people have died installing roof insulation since the scheme was introduced 
a year ago.

Mr Garrett said the government would pursue those installers who did not do the 
right thing.
