Are "modified starch" and "modified maize" genetically modified foods? I recently asked this question of an UK foodstore and was told that modified starch and maize are not genetically modified. Anyone like to confirm or deny this? Thanks

Well, most modified starch, as I understand is acid modified. This in itself is not genetic modification. However, the answer to your question is dependant mostly on the source of the starch. If it is of maize origin, it is more likely (but not highly likely) to be of genetically modified breeding, as opposed to wheaten starch. More genetic modification has been done on corn/maize and soy as opposed to wheat. As I said, it relies upon what base grain is used to process the starch Ruth F Price <ruth@ferris-price.freeserve.co.uk> wrote in message news:85fd0b$1sh$2@news5.svr.pol.co.uk... > Are "modified starch" and "modified maize" genetically modified foods? > > I recently asked this question of an UK foodstore and was told that modified > starch and maize are not genetically modified. As I understand it, maize is used for production of modified starch, but it is the waxy maize form that is used which has not been subject to gm.
