- by the late Prof. Manning Clark, reads like a novel, and is a classic.
Whatever the ultimate fate of his expanded 6-volume History, the prior
Short version is a gem, and is recommended reading.
Of course, you must take the possible slant of any historian into account,
but this book struck me as unique when first encountered in 1963, and
you may still obtain it in a Penguin edition.
However, Manning Clark, while using skilful prose, and creating vivid
imagery, doesn't seem to have a slant - more like, few illusions.
"The Weekend Australian" is reviewing a biography of Clark (due out soon).
