PLEASE MAKE IT YOUR POLICY NOT TO SAVE ANY ILLEGAL PICTURES AND TO DELETE
YOUR HISTORY & TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES AT THE END OF EACH SESSION.

ARE YOU BEING CHARGED AT �1.50 PER MINUTE ??

## some internet sites will redirect you to pay per view  charged at up to
�1.50 per minute.  You must BAR premium rate calls from your telephone line
to avoid premium rate charges.

This action of changing your dial up options by the use of invasive software
is a legal loophole and is beleived to be illegal.  The instigators of these
services are not necessarily from the united kingdom so may not be bound by
english or scottish law.  Offenders can be reported to ICSTIS but
compensation may have to be sought through legal action.

It is your responsibility to ensure the security and use of your telecoms
equipment and an ISP can in no way be responsible for the misuse or fraud
occuring through a part of the ISP.  It is advised to maintain regular
checks of your connection and bar premium rate calls in order to avoid
misuse.

## bar premium rate calls, such as 090 or 0898 numbers by telephoning (BT)
customer services free on 150 (/1/2/3).  This is normally a free service.

Your ISP dial up is a free phone number of 0808 and this is free to dial any
time night or day.

If you withhold your telephone number you have to prefix your telephone
number with 1470 to allow the server at the ISP to connect you (for security
reasons).
This can be input at TOOLS/ INTERNET OPTIONS /CONNECTIONS/ SETTINGS /
PROPERTIES or at START / DIAL UP NETWORKING / PROPERTIES.

## Check your phone bill at any time by calling 0800 854608.  This is a free
and automated service.

Are you still paying for internet calls ??
Make sure you are not still using LOCAL RATE CALLS / PAY AS YOU GO for your
connection.  This can get very pricey especially during the day.    Alter
your settings and delete this number at START / DIAL UP NETWORKING.  Calls
to the internet will be free once you receive your accountt.  You must
ensure that the account you are using is the correct one and that it has
been made the default account if other dial up numbers are present in your
DIAL UP NETWORKING dialogue box.

Right click on the computer shaped icon in the bottom right hand corner of
your screen when connected to the internet.  Select STATUS to check who you
are connected to.
 You can also check these settings at START / DIAL UP NETWORKING and TOOLS /
INTERNET OPTIONS in the tool bar

Don't let others see what you surf.
Always delete your history and delete the temporary internet files at the
end of a session.
You may also clear cookies at FIND/ FILES AND FOLDERS /  (in NAMED box type
COOKIE and look in drive C: or MY COMPUTER.  (This also clears some faults)

Delete the 2 sets of MY DOCUMENTS from the computers memory
Any file or pictures you save are saved twice.  This includes word
processing, program downloads, pictures, artwork.  If you deem any of your
work private, you are advised to delete any documents from the computer
after you have saved them to disc.
To delete documents X2 follow these instructions.  REMEMBERING TO EMPTY THE
RECYCLE BIN TO COMPLETE THE DELETE

1.  My documents (1)   located in START MENU.   Manually delete each file.
 .....OR .........
 Right click on the box (TIME ) in bottom right hand corner of screen,
select PROPERTIES and then rear TAB.  Click on CLEAR to delete the MY
DOCUMENTS folder contents.

2.  My documents (2)   on the DESKTOP (icon) .  Double click on the icon and
select all, followed by delete.
EMPTY THE RECYCLE BIN TO COMPLETE THE DELETE (by right clicking on the icon
marked MY DOCUMENTS on the Desktop).

Favourites folder   You should be aware that URLs and files are also stored
in the favourites folder (if you add them to it), this can be found in the
tool bar and in the START MENU and in the TOOL BAR under FAVOURITES.
Favourites have to be manually deleted.

DONT GET CAUGHT WITH YOUR PANTS DOWN
It is strongly suggested that you do not let others use the pc until you are
familiar with it.  Any website you visit is recorded in the computers memory
for up to 999 days (nearly 3 years, until HISTORY is deleted either manually
or automatically as preset.

YOU CAN GET EASILY RIPPED OFF
The pc is a personal item.  It is advised not to enter personal information
that others might find advantageous onto the net.  Your personal details
including your name, address, email address, nickname or any other personal
details.  Bank details are liable to fraudulent use.
Be very wary of persons in chat rooms, forums  or otherwise.

Penaltys can be harsh
Be aware that some items such as weapons or pornography may be illegal and
it is advised to proceed with caution.  Possesion of pornography may be a
criminal offence.

Spam  spam  spam
Do not enter information into forms requiring your email address etc or else
you will just get millons of emails, computer jargon calls these junk emails
, spam.

Get protection ,  (some) anonimity and uncensored freedom.
Use a proxy server if you wish to gain protection of your IP, anonimity and
reach more sites  Gain access to sites deemed inappropriate by ISP,
goverment, police etc.   A proxy server offers anonimity because you access
web sites VIA the PROXY SERVER.

Lists of proxy servers can be found by using the search words such as FREE
PROXY  SERVER.
Boxes must be checked and information about the proxy server entered at
TOOLS / INTERNET OPTIONS / CONNECTIONS / SETTINGS / proxy server / advanced.
Enter the information at ADVANCED and tick  USE SAME PROXY FOR ALL
PROTOCOLS.
Enter the information including the PORT NUMBER on the top line of the
ADVANCED page, tick the box and press enter.

1.  Uncheck the box marked BYPASS PROXY FOR LOCAL ADDRESSES.
2.  Check (tick) the box marked USE A PROXY SERVER.
3.  At ADVANCED type your proxy server in all the boxes (use the select all
protocols
            check box.)
BEWARE OF PROXY SERVERS IF THE OWNERSHIP OF THE SERVER IS UNKNOWN.  DO NOT
ENTER PERSONAL INFORMATION.

TROUBLESHOOTING
If you get trouble with your computer this may be because you have some
corrupt files on your pc.  You may also have a virus or some rogue programs
in your system.  Try one of the following options.

1.  Stop the current offending program / task by pressing CTRL / ALT / DEL
at the same time, and select the option in the dialogue box.
2.  Log off (find LOG OFF at START MENU in bottom left hand corner of
screen).
3.  Shut down and restart.
4.  Delete COOKIES. You may clear cookies at FIND/ FILES AND FOLDERS /  (in
NAMED box type COOKIE and  LOOK IN .....drive C: or MY COMPUTER.  Double
click on the folder in the list the computer has found and delete all the
files except the file named INDEX.DAT which you will not be able to delete
as access will be denied.  (SELECT ALL can be used to delete these files.)
5.  Uninstall any dialer program which you can locate from their icons
either on your DESKTOP or in the bottom right hand corner of your screen.
Remove using FIND FILES AND FOLDERS.   You may have to LOG OFF to complete
this operation as some files may be found to be IN USE.  Delete any added
dial up numbers at DIAL UP NETWORKING.
6.  USE THE HELPLINE.



###IF EVERY THING ABOVE DOES NOT WORK AND YOUR COMPUTER DOES NOT START
FUNCTIONING NORMALLY, A LAST DITCH OPTION IS TO FORMAT & SET UP##
### CAUTION  FORMATTING REMOVES ALL DATA FROM THE HARD DISC OR C:

###CAUTION WINDOWS 98 OR SIMILAR SETUP CD ROM IS REQUIRED OR YOUR SYSTEM
WILL NOT RESTART.###

If you wish to FORMAT your hard disc and start over.   This usually takes
under 45 minutes and can be speeded up if you save your INTERNET USERNAME,
PASSWORD AND EMAIL SETTINGS  to a floppy disc.  Remember to save your user
name, password and email settings before proceeding.


If you want to start over and wipe the hard disc of data and then setup the
computer with windows 98 or whatever software you have then the following
commands are needed.
You  must now restart the computer with the START UP DISC  You can create a
START UP DISC at  ADD  REMOVE PROGRAMS / CONTOL PANEL   (or reinsert the
WINDOWS CD ROM and select the option ADD REMOVE PROGRAMS)
##Remember to save your user name, password and email settings before
proceeding.

THE COMMANDS TO ENTER AT THE DOS PROMPT ARE:
1.   FORMAT C:
2.   SETUP
You may have to change the drive you are in to start the sequence.  Type  x:
and enter/return.  (substitute x with the drive a,c,d,  or whatever drive it
is.)

TO REWRITE OVER LARGE AREAS OF HARD DISC

### WARNING -  FORMATTING DOES NOT COMPLETELY WRITE OVER ALL THE DATA FROM
YOUR HARD DISC.  PREVIOUS DATA HAS TO BE OVERWRITTEN WITH LARGE DATA FILES
OR A SPECIAL PROGRAM.  THIS MEANS THAT SOME DATA CAN BE RECOVERED UNDER
SCIENTIFIC CONDITIONS WITH SPECIAL EQUIPMENT###

Ideally a special program is used rewrite over areas of hard disc previously
used to hold data.  Hard drives over 1 gigabyte may take a long time ,
several attempts and several large files to complete an overwrite.

To transfer a large data file, insert a suitable CD ROM and open WINDOWS
EXPLORER.  Go to D: or cd rom drive and open folders until a suitable FOLDER
( ie SOFTWARE) folder can be found to transfer.
Computer magazine cd roms are ideal for this purpose.  Choose a folder that
has a lot of different programs contained in one folder.  Ideally a folder
with at least a few hundred megabytes.

OPENING DOWNLOADED FILES

You will find that files are saved / downloaded etc in different formats.
One of the most common sorts of file is WINZIP.  You normally need to have a
copy of winzip running on your pc before it will open.

Look at the letters after the filename to determine what sort of file it is.
egample   myfilename.zip

Some winzip file are self unzipping / opening.
Note that the purpose of WINZIP is to bundle several files together and send
them as one file.  To run some programs such as a driver you may have
downloaded, you need to check if the files contained in the folder require
the following:
1.     click on a particular file such as file named SETUP using WINDOWS
EXPLORER.
2.    may need to send all the files individually to a floppy disc (so that
the computer can find them when you load the driver etc using ADD NEW
HARDWARE.
3.    Start the self unzipping by clicking on the icon using WINDOWS
EXPLORER.

UNINSTALLING DIALER PROGRAMS

As I mentioned before there are quite a lot of sites that require payment
and are using dialer programs with invasive software in order to obtain
payment.  This is usually arround �1.50 per minute.

The easiest way to make sure you don't incur these charges is to bar premum
rate charges from your telephone.  THE OFFENDING DIALER WON'T WORK AFTER YOU
BAR PREMIUM RATE CALLS (but will still exist on your computer until you can
find a way of uninstalling it).

##WRITE DOWN  THE FILENAME OF THE OFFENDING ICON / PROGRAM ##
If you download a dialer program, this will change your DIAL UP NETWORKING
SETTINGS so you must remove the offending new dialer.
You may need to LOG OFF and try uninstalling the offending program several
times using different methods but mainly right click on any of the icons in
an attempt to locate an uninstall option.
There is no one easy answer to this , but often best if you write down the
file name of downloaded icons (on the desktop).   Then use START / FIND
FILES AND FOLDERS , and select all followed by delete.
If you cannot delete all or any of the offending files try deleting one at a
time and continue to right click on any of the icons in an attempt to locate
an uninstall option.
