Hi all Recently got a .com.au domain name that was available (obviously) Have noticed that some people seem to still be using email addresses @my domain Have spoken to the previous owner of the domain and he has clearly not contacted all his customers of the old domain to instruct them that they will not receive any replies unless they change their email addres. This leads to 4 questions 1) How can I find out how long the domain name was available untill I got it. 2) Can a domain name be used after your registration has expired. 3) Is it legal for me, as domain admin to read mail intended for another person. 4) what efforts should I go to to resolve this problem for the customers of an ISP that I have no association with. Thanks Charles

Personaly i'd just start bouncing messages. people will soon start asking the people they are trying to email (somehow) whats going on. On the other hand could could create some email acounts and start chaging these people for it. > >Thanks >Charles > hope i could help shaun

Chas,
I have had similar problems with other unauthorised persons using my
domain name, although mine is a .com only.
I am not receiving people's mail directed to a previous owner, I am
getting bounces from potential spammers' e-mail adventures.
I suggest looking within an expired domain directory to find out how
long the domain was available for. If it was a short period of perhaps
under a month, the previous owner may have not let anyone know of
the change.
A domain name can be utilised, in sending mail to, by any person
whether it is registered and in active use or not.
I am not 100% certain of the legal standing of reading others' e-mail,
but I am sure no one should complain, if you do so only to advise the
e-mailing party of the e-mail address that you used to contact the
previous domain name registrar.
I would respond to 'their' e-mail messages with a standard message
describing the situation, and the e-mail address that can be used to
contact the person/business they are looking for.
It is definitely a bit of effort on your part, but it creates good will
with people. And if you are using a domain that another has used,
you may very well be offering similar products or services.
(Can't be sure unless I know your domain name).
Especially if the domain mentions your field of expertise or business
industry.
I hope this helps you out,
Fiona Fell
