SAVE ITALIAN AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA CAMPAIGN

SAMPLE LETTERS TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA IF YOU WISH TO SEND ONE TO NEWSPAPERS
OR COUNCILLORS:

 Letters to the Mercury:

Dear Sir,
               Beware of Italians bearing Gifts!!

This appears to be the policy of the current administration of the
University of Tasmania. In the context of the Federal Liberal Governments
needless federal budget cuts, the University of Tasmania is planning to
eliminate completely the entire program of Italian.

This is despite the proposal of the Modern Languages Department to replace
one of the current Italian lecturers (who would take a voluntary
redundancy) with a FULLY FUNDED TENURED LECTURER PROVIDED BY THE ITALIAN
GOVERNMENT, (confirmed and worth $60,000 per annum) and a Senior Lecturer
in French being replaced by a lower level appointee. Both of these
initiatives would together create total annual savings of $92,000.

Thus the University administration, which needs to find 1% in savings from
the School of Humanities and Social Sciences 1997 budget (ie $100,000
from a total annual budget of $10 million) is refusing to do so, unless it
means doing away with the Major in Italian. This is despite the fact that
the whole of the Schools savings can be generated from the one Department
of Modern languages without axing any course.

It can only be considered ludicrous that the University of Tasmanias
administration is effectively refusing $100,000 a year, which would save
the Italian major at the University of Tasmania, and instead prefers to do
away with it completely, thereby irrevocably damaging the Universitys
quality reputation not only in Australia, but also internationally.

I always thought that the reason for Higher Education was to create well
rounded, flexible individuals, who could change their plans when
circumstances meant that it was possible and sensible to do so.

It would seem that I was mistaken in this respect when it comes to the
administration of the University of Tasmania. It occurs to me that, the
heads of an institution of which we should all feel justifiably proud, are
followers of a School of Intellectual Philistinism worthy of Genghis
Ghans favour.

Luigi Bini
Save Italian at the University of Tasmania Campaign.

 Dear Sir,
The More Things Change, the More they Stay the Same.

It is sad to see that once again the Italian Major at the University of
Tasmania is on the chopping block. Yet the saddest thing about it is that
the study of Italian is being threatened with extinction at tertiary
level, .when it is on the verge of once and for all being solidly
ensconced in primary and secondary schools in Tasmania.

Italian has been studied at the University of Tasmania since 1981, and has
been taught at matriculation level since the late 1950s. It has also been
taught variously in Saturday morning classes, and state and private
schools since that time.

At present there are 1,100 primary and secondary students studying Italian
in schools in Tasmania, and such is the recognition of this by the State
Department of Education and the Arts, that Italian has been instituted in
an experimental cluster of southern State Schools, as a pathway language.
This means that in 1996, Italian has been introduced at primary school
level in those schools, and will be progressively taught at higher levels
as the initial students advance. Eventually this will create a pathway
to study at tertiary level.

This will mean that the current demand for Italian which is, and has
always been comparable with the other modern European languages studied at
the University, will only be greater as the years progress.

Italian has gotten to this stage in Tasmania because of the hard work of
Tasmanians, and through the support of the Italian government which has
seed funded much of the development of Italian in schools in Tasmania for
the past three decades. For the University administration to be planning
once again to cut this course, is an action which would break the heart of
even the most hardened campaigner. This is despite the fact that the
Italian government has offered a fully funded, tenured lecturer which will
be available for years to come.

Of course the added disregard of the offers and compromises laid out by
the Department of Modern Languages, and the Italian government only serve
to add insult to this state of despair.

The total disregard of the efforts of a diverse community of people over
almost 40 years, throws into doubt any claims made by the University of
Tasmania to be a community spirited organisation. The loss of Italian at
the University of Tasmania would constitute a brutal act of vandalism.
