What I have done (experimentally) is set up an Alex file system on one of
my hosts and then modified the Hostlist file so that all the top level
domain references are actually pointers to /alex/au/archie/alex. 
ie /alex/edu -> /alex/au/archie/alex/edu

This means that all file access overseas via Alex so through the 
cache on archie.au. It does work, but since I only set it up yesterday 
I'm not sure what practical problems having two levels of Alex
causes. 

The Alex server talks the NFS protocol so a single server can be
accessed from multiple machines. It is a very nice interface to
the anonymous ftp world.

I did have to delete a line of code from the server which prevented
going through multiple servers.
