Here's the "official" response, or explaination, for the network outage at DSTO
on Wednesday 3 Feb 92, from CIS.

The CIS router which interconnects most Salisbury LANs with Melbourne and
Canberra LANs and with AARNet was down due to a contact failure in one of its
CPU modules. It went down after close of business on Tuesday and was operational
again by 10:00 on Wednesday (despite romours that it took longer). CIS
identified the faulty module and replaced it; thus restoring the operation of
the main router. Honeywell helped out later by fixing the module.

Some countermeasures which were taken while the router was down were reversed
or adjusted over the next few hours to fully restore connectivity.

There was an additional problem which has only just been resolved by a change
in the weather. The CIS router serving TSAS has been operating intermittently
since the start of the recent heatwave. The problem was that the air
conditioner in the building had been left without a motor since before
christmas! Such is the state of our facilities services. ACS have given us
assurances that the airconditioner will survive the next heatwave this weekend.

CIS apologises for any inconvenience caused.
