Please forgive the (now annual) shameless plug for the SAGE-AU annual conference - http://www.sage-au.org.au/conf/ . The System Administrators Guild of Australia are holding their Annual Conference and Tutorials in Melbourne this year, on the 5th to the 9th of August. Tutorial sessions are run on the Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday, and represent excellent training value. Tutorial topics that may interest ISP's include: TROUBLESHOOTING AND PROBLEM SOLVING - Elizabeth Zwicky This tutorial presents systematic methods for troubleshooting and problem solving, with a view to improving participants' individual skills, and to assist in teaching effective problem solving to other System Administrators TOOLS FOR CREATING HAPPY USERS - Tom Limoncelli This workshop will present technical issues that contribute to making a good first impression on users, and maintaining that relationship. LARGE-SCALE BACKUPS USING LEGATO NETWORKER - Shane McEwan This tutorial provides a practical introduction to the use of Legato Networker for managing an organisation's backups. This course will be of benefit to System Administrators who have minimal experience with Legato and who need to deploy an effective backup strategy using Networker. SECURING YOUR IIS WEB SERVER - Peter Calvert This is a half day tutorial aimed at systems administrators and web site developers. DOCUMENTATION TECHNIQUES FOR SYSTEM ADMINISTRATORS - Mike Ciavarella This tutorial is targeted at System Administrators who need to produce documentation for the systems they manage or who need to improve their documentation skills. DESIGNING A MACHINE ROOM - Don Gingrich The design of a purpose-built machine room is one of the more difficult tasks that a System Administrator can undertake since it generally involves skills and knowledge beyond Information Technology. IMPLEMENTING AND TUNING SQUID - Adrian Chadd With the Internet bandwidth in Australia being charged by the byte, many organisations need to consider ways on managing their ever-increasing usage of the Internet. This tutorial is aimed at System Administrators who would like to implement Squid in their organisation, or who already have a default Squid installation and would like to improve their cache's performance. Other tutorials include LDAP (Bradly Marshall), Perl (Randal Schwartz), Network Security (David Ross), Management (Geoff Halprin), Introduction to SNORT (Karl Hanmore), SNMP (David Ross), Centralised management of Win2k & XP (Peter Calvert) and Unix Shell Scripting (Mike Ciavarella). The Thursday and Friday are conference days, and include sessions such as: Deconstructing User Requests (Tom Limoncelli), Overview of ADSL in Australia (Simon Hacket), LDAP, Samba & Unix Authentication (Tom Hallam), a Keynote "The Lord of Change (or how Weta Digital prepared for Lord of the Rings)" (Shane McEwan, Weta Digital (Lord of the Rings graphics gurus)), Traffic Watch (internet cost accounting) (Tim Bell), etc. Places are filling very fast - some tutorial sessions have already sold out.
