Narrowband Comes to UHF CB

Looks like ACMA are going ahead with extending the top channels up a
few khz. This is to accomodate 80 12.5khz spaced channels.

Repeaters will be made to swap to narrow band to. With channels
interleaved with the current ones.

After 5 years old wide band gear will not be suported.

Repeater allocation rules have been relaxed. Anyone know to what
exactly? Hope the bashed that 20km rule in the bin.

Nice to see some commonscience took place and we didn't get a mixed
bag of wide repeaters and narrow simplex channels. What a crock that
would be!

Still kicken Kev.

Yes most people i would suspect it's just a tick the Narrow box in the
software.

You reckon most people are using ham radio's?

I heard someone say over the air once that 25% of people already use
half channels but I don't believe it. I find 25% of transmissions
much more believable as extended conversations occur far more
frequently there.

Yeah, when I first heard that, I thought it was incompatible, but I
realised narrow transmissions through a wideband repeater would
probably be come through to narrow receiver fine.

No it won't as the repeater will RX it as a narrow band and TX it as a
wide band with very low audio and it would be RXed by the narrowband
radio as low audio and distorted/clipped
The QLD Police had this problem when some narrow band radios were
installed and used on the wideband repeaters

Technically speaking it will. Narrow in should give you Narrow out too
if the repeater is working spot on! You should get the same out as
what went in. Obviously in the real world things will not be exact but
close. Things like distortion and diferent frequency responses in the
gear used to make the repeater can effect this.

Commercial comms repeaters regenerate the different CTCSS tones at the
tone panel for that customer. Once the RX has picked up the mobile and
the tone panel has worked out who it is (or if it's valid) it will be
re generated and sent out at the level set by the repeater operator.
The voice will be as above.

Since CB repeaters aren't CTCSS controlled for acess this isn't a
problem. It is an issue for the commercial boys running a mix bag of
radios to different customers.

If you have a commercial radio and it can do for 12.5KHz steps, like Nike
says, just do it ?
