It seems an Austrian has sky-dived from the edge of outer space, some 38 km up, and has broken the sound barrier in his descent, landing safely via parachute. Was there a sonic boom when he exceeded speed of sound, or, due to thin air, no actual noise? And, while he may have sped down quite fast in the rarer upper reaches, he presumably reached terminal velocity once denser atmosphere prevailed? So, what was proved which could not be anticipated?
