Time travel may be a pleasant fiction, but is impossible in practice.
What? You have an individual, in a mechanical device, who can travel
back, or forward, in time, independent of the rest of the cosmos?
"The Past", for example, no longer exists, as the atoms now
constituting your body are recycled atoms from those of a dinosaur, rock, or
plant, of the Past - on finite planet Earth.
"The Future" is yet to come; and while its nature can be anticipated,
it just doesn't exist in Present Time.
"The Present" moment is all that exists, and for any entity to exist
for any "length" of time, it must have not only the Three Spatial Dimensions
of Width, Height, and Depth, but also the Time Dimension of - Duration.
Also, there is Causality. All Events have prior Causes, but not
necessarily be Causes.
So, can a Time Traveler detach himself from the universal causality,
such that he goes back and forwards independently of all non-self causality.
It would seem not.
And while the mental fictions of warp drive, or even Relativity, may
try and bend this basic contention, they have yet to be proved.
But what of the world of Astronomers?
Light from distant stars reaches us, millions of light-years after the
star has possibly expired, but the now non-existent Past has still gone.
What we see occurs in our Present, but the Past is over, irrespective.
All that exists is : the dividing line between Past and Future - the
Present moment.
Time Travel IS possible? Proof, please!
