We can't blame a shark for acting instinctively, and biting a human who invades its territory. However, while countering a Great White is a formidable proposition, are there any options? It is said that airmen who crash in the sea are advised to be wearing drab clothing, not bright colours, and it is noticeable that most shoal fish are dark on top, and white underneath (for deception purposes). And while a shark is attracted to the smell of blood, what smell deters? Swimmers wearing a dark skin-tight suit of fine metal mesh, coated with grease, may, or may not foil the jaws and teeth of a shark - but who is willing to try? Where human crowds swim, protective area netting may stop sharks, but the scuba diver or surfer may be on his/her own, and take a calculated chance. Would appropriate swim-wear help?
