I am a bit concerned with considerable rush by many VCE colleges to offer
a year 13 based on open learning subjects.

I am sure many of us are concerned at the considerable demand which cannot
be met by the present university system. Open learning has been very
successful overseas and is, I believe, a very cost effective teaching
method for many people who would not ordinarily be able to attend an
institution.

For students who miss out on a place at university year 13 may seem an
almost too logical alternative. How many extra positions will be made
available at campus based universities for students who compete the year -
I would think not too many.

[and I can't see a student who may have studied at a campus being kicked
out to make way for a more successful open learning student in 2nd year]
 
Industry recognition of the units would IMHO not be too high,
while the ability to transfer credit through to TAFE based courses may be
more promising.

I just hope those students going on with Y13 have looked at all the
options, and that the colleges are not being too optimistic in their
promotion of Y13.
