In the last few days there have been some rumours at Adelaide Uni that
there aere some staff from a number of Unis pushing for an increase to
the student allowance and/or the removal of the parental
means-testing. The rumours don't seem to be consistent about who is
actually behind this, although I have heard Prof. Crewther's name
mentioned, this doesn't seem to be quite his style.

The justification for the rumoured claims the staff are using is that
student performance has declined over the past 20 years in line with
the decrease in the proportion of the educational and living costs
covered by the governent, owing to the increades need for students to
work longer hours during the semester, particularly those who do not
live with thier parents. I have no idea if this is justified by
statistics, although it does seem reasonable.

There was AFICT no report on this in The Australian's Higher Education
Supplement this morning (although I may have missed it), whihc would
lead me to immediately discount the rumours if they weren't so
consistent.

Does anyone know if this is true, or merely wishfull thinking?
Has anyone elsewhere heard these rumours?
