In article <matth.733625099@extro.ucc.su.OZ.AU> matth@extro.ucc.su.OZ.AU (Matthew Hannigan) writes: [ comp.tex.tex added ] [ battles with metafont ] In the same thread, I used a PS n-up package to print the final postscript four to a page to save some paper. (the GNU make doco is 100 pages long.) It would still be quite readable _except_ that resolution of the fonts _as printed_ is something to be desired. I presume this is because I generated fonts at 300 dpi and when they get printed on a 4up page, the effective resolution is half that. SO, I tried asking for 600dpi fonts. However MakeTeXPK associates the res. with a `mode' which indicates the print engine. So I lied to it, and modified my local MakeTexPK and my mf/inputs/<blah>-site.mf file to generate 600 dpi even for my printer. But this didn't work for some reason; it kept on not recognizing my request for 600dpi properly. (the symptom being that when it doesn't find some resoltion printer combination that it likes it goes into 'proof' mode and starts laboriously showing each symbol in a huge X window) Q1: IS my analysis correct (I need to generate higher res. tex fonts to get better output on an N-up page) Q2: IF so, does anyone have an idea of what I can do to get such higher res. fonts. Thanks in advance, Struggling. (Matt Hannigan) You are better off getting Metafont to do the scaling. Use dvidvi to do the n-up shifting and font scaling (there are many heavily-hacked versions of dvidvi about, they might not all do scaling), then dvips (hoping you are using it) will get Metafont to build any new fonts you need at your printer's favourite resolution. geoff o -- geoffo@cse.unsw.edu.au Geoff Oakley: CS&E, UNSW, PO Box 1, Kensington, NSW 2033, Australia Phone: +61 2 697 4043 Fax: +61 2 313 7987
