As I have learned METAFONT produces PostScript-like outlines somewhere
inbetween it's production process. It's there where the *Meta*-Font is
reduced to ``just'' a font, before the characters of this font are
converted to bitmaps.

In the proceedings of the EuroTeX88 conference (from Exeter,
bibliography below) there is an article on the topic `combining MF
and PostScript.' Sorry, I don't have the book here so I cannot tell
you the author and the title of the article (but I heard his talk in
Exeter).
   Furthermore Yannis has told that he produces PS outlines from MF
font descriptions. Perhaps the interested persons should contact him.
