For some *stupid* reason, my \pagestyle{empty} declarations have stopped
working on the first page. I tried them after \begin{document}, before it, in
my style files, in their own style files, and so on, and I still get a page
number 1 no matter what. I don't get other page numbers. This is article
   documentstyle. Whaddami doing wrong please?

You may be using \titlepage or something else that explicitly set a
pagestyle for its own special page. If so, the answer is to do a
\thispagestyle{empty} immediately after the invocation of \titlepage
(or whatever you are using).
