To all those who replied to my earlier message thanks.
I now have heaps of suggestions.

To all those having the same problem, I'll post a summary
of my replies.  The one critical factor seems to be
getting encapsulated postscript files in the first place

Then incorporating these into dvips.  \special does not seem to
be highly recommended by most people.
