How to rotate text in TeX/LaTeX?

I would like to rotate a given string of text by 90 degrees. I have got
rotate.sty, but it ONLY rotates the string such that it appears as a
vertical column of text, one character per line. What I want is that the
string becomes a column AND EACH character is rotated by 90 degrees. Do
I need some new fonts, or will a single TeX macro package be sufficient?

Thanks in advance.
