Meet the Austin High-Tech Crime Unit!

The time: 7PM August 21 1995
The place: La Madeleine Cafe, 3418 North Lamar
The sponsor: EFF-Austin

The subject: cybercrime in Austin

If you're an EFF-Austin regular, you've heard from programmers, business
people, political activists, journalists, academics -- yes, even game
designers and science fiction writers. Now it's time to hear from the guys
on the street: Austin Police Department officers Paul Brick and Randy
Bradley. These gentlemen are from our fair city's recently-formed specialty
High-Tech Crime Unit. They'll be giving us the lowdown on what's happening
in Austin cybercrime: chip theft, computer smash-and-grab, organized phone
crime and equipment fencing.

It's notoriously hard to assert your electronic First Amendment
rights of free expression when your PC and modem are out the door in the
custody of burglars. And since most everybody in Austin is on-line these
days, so are Austin's crooks. Drop by, ask questions and get up-to-speed.

At this meeting, we'll be looking for EFF-Austin volunteers for the
upcoming High Tech Crime Investigation Association national seminar, to be
held November 6-7-8. The HTCIA has traditionally thrown the nation's
largest seminars for professional computer-crime investigators in and out of
uniform. This year their gig takes place, very appropriately, here in
Austin. We of EFF-Austin will be holding a social mixer and bringing the
coffee beer and doughnuts. If this is your sort of thing, make the August
21 meeting and let's talk.
