**** The subject of a name change for EFF-Austin came up, as it does with terrible regularity, and was shouted down by the name-change skeptics. About this time, Jon Lebkowsky showed up with several new possible names. The current heavy disarray at EFF- Bay Area (formerly EFF National) makes it seem wise to shelve this debate for the time being. If we find we need a new name after all, Lebkowsky is clearly our man. **** EFF is still EFF, as national as always. We're just not in DC or MA any more. We do appologize for the "disarray", which has been very real and very much a pain the bee-hind. To clarify the Bay area thing, there is no EFF Bay Area, but there's "BayFF", which isn't an organization, it's just EFF member meetings in the SF Bay area, hosted usually by our boardmember John Gilmore. Personally, I hope the eventual result of them will be the founding of an EF-Bay or EF-California to work on local/state issues. Every state needs one of these (whatever the names). So far only Texas (on a multi-local basis via EFF-A., EFH, and maybe an EF El Paso, but I'm not sure), New York (via SEA) and New Hampshire (via EFNH) have any kind of e-activism state-level infrastructure, AFAIK. SF almost had this, but This!Group fell apart almost two years ago, and there doesn't appear to've been any concerted organizing efforts since then. :( --
Stanton McCandlish
mech@eff.org
Electronic Frontier Foundation
Online Activist
