                 THE MENTAL CONTROL OF BELIEF
(OR SPINOZA HAD A GREAT IDEA AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS LOUSY T-SHIRT)
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

                   PROFESSOR DANIEL GILBERT
                  UT Department of Psychology

     Can people have ideas without believing them?
    "Of course, they can, you idiot!" said Rene Descartes in 1641,
and just about everyone since then has agreed with him.
     Everyone, that is, except Baruch Spinoza, who suggested that
the comprehension of an idea includes an initial acceptance of that
idea.
     We will discuss new research that suggests that human beings
automatically enter a state of belief upon comprehending (and
before evaluating) an assertion, and that Spinoza was not an
idiot after all.
