A computer bulletin board shut down this week allegedly contained
images of bestiality and sexual acts involving excrement, Maricopa County 
officials said.  Depiction of either sex act would violate state obscenity 
statutes.
The state Department of Public Safety pulled the plug on the Wish
Book," a pay-for-access bulletin board, on Tuesday.  DPS officer Lorne 
Shantz, 38, who operated the bulletin board from his Phoenix home was 
suspended with pay, pending the outcome of the investigation.
"This is not a broad attack on bulletin boards.  We're talking about
very specific things," said Barnett Lotstein, special assistant to Maricopa 
County Attorney Rick Romley.  "We're not focusing on Playboy magazine or 
whether you have a picture of a naked woman."
Shantz, a 14 year veteran of the department, began the bulletin board
in August 1988 as a legitimate venture.  No criminal charges have been 
filed against Shantz.  He declined comment Wednesday on the advice of 
attorneys.
It was not known when Shantz began providing access to pornographic
material, but officers learned about the matter several months ago, said 
DPS Sgt. Dave Myers.  Three search warrants were served Tuesday.
"It has nothing to do with pornography or the adult sections," Myers
said.  "This investigation is targeting obscenties."
About half of the board's 109,000 files are characterized as containing
adult material, Myers said.  Only some of those are alleged to violate 
Arizona obscenity statutes.  The board had about 4100 users from around the 
world.
County officials also are trying to determine whether the bulletin
board violated any copyright laws.
