                   PROFESSOR LARRY JACOBY
The David Weschler Regents Chair in Human Abilities
                 Department of Psychology, UT

It is a common observation that elderly people repeatedly tell
the same stories.
Does this happen because of an inability to remember things?
Or, is it related to differences between automatic and
consciously-controlled uses of memory?
We will discuss how separating automatic and controlled
processes is important for both the diagnosis of memory disabilities
and the re-training of memory.
We will also consider new research that uses these two types of
processes to clarify how attention operates. This research reveals
that there is very fast, context-specific, learning of associations
that serves as a basis for automatic responses.
