Commercialization of the Net : Threat or Menace?
Moderator : Jon Lebkowsky
Monday, November 20th, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
La Madalein, 3418 North Lamar
The topic of this general meeting is the role commercialization has played
upon the character and nature of the Internet. Spams, unsolicited e-mail
advertisements, Web "malls" and other marketing mechanisms designed to tap
the power of cyberspace are now a daily -- if highly debated -- part of
online life. Three years ago, such behavior was unheard of, but now that
Internet access has been granted to those beyond the domain of scientists
and academics, the social contract which has guided this virtual community
for the last 20 years is irreparably altered. But is it broken? Is there a
balance between community values and the economic forces of technology? Can
the new rules of commerce -- small, fast, interdependency -- support a
larger economic infrastructure?
Moderator for this session is Jon Lebkowsky, former President of EFF-Austin,
a current Board of Directors member and one of the co-founders of
Fringeware, Inc.
