Whoever posted the above reply shouldn't be passing out miss information
to which they know nothing about. Becky didn't ask for a big dawg she asked
about a Newfoundand. They are not in decline but to the contrary they are
very much in demand. Their are people at present waiting for pups and even
rescues. The newf-l list is one of the more active groups on the 'net with
35 -40 posts per day and goes world wide from New Zealand to Holland. Some
big dawgs maybe in decline (which is good for the breed) but don't
generalize that all big dawgs are in decline.

As for negoiation, forget it. If you don't want the pup there are 10 people
lined up behind you waiting. (doesn't sound like a good negoiating point)
The newf breeders are more concerned on the home they are going to than
anything else and I have herd stories of people being tunred down from
breeders even with the money hanging out of their pockets. For starters be
prepare to be in the neighborhood of 1,000 to 1,200 and up with the
breeder picking out the pup your'e going to get not you. It's not like
buying a car, you do want a dawg thats sound! You may get a "cheaper" dawg
from a backyard breeder, but you may wind up paying more in vet bills than
the original cost of the dawg.

To find out more about Newfies you can call the AKC, go to the Newfoudland
Nationals the week of April 23 in Carlisle Pa., subscirbe to the Newf-l
list at listserv@lists.colorado.edu find out where the closest regional
Newfound Club is or speak to some breeders and owners. These are the
people who can advise you on the pros and cons of the Newfoundland.

Good luk in your search
