Dot.com news: Pop dead - Shockwave shifting - MPAA gearing up for future =
online hardball
Wow!!! Am I being paranoid here or have we just had a sort of Hollywood =
digital version of the Night of the Long Knives happen?
    1) Pop.com, the supposedly kick-ass entertainment site that Steven =
Spielberg, Ron Howard, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Microsoft's Paul Allen =
were working on, has officially gone under without ever actually =
launching.
    2) Shockwave.com has cut staff and announced a dramatic shift away =
from projects involving certain high-profile creative types such as Tim =
Burton, James L Brooks, Harland Williams and the SOUTH PARK dudes, Trey =
Parker and Matt Stone, and instead will focus more on online gaming.=20
    3) Good ole Jack Valenti and the MPAA have just announced that we =
can expect the secure online downloading of Hollywood features in " . as =
little as one year." Does this not all fly in the face of all the recent =
expert opinions we've been hearing lately attesting to the fact that the =
words "secure", "online" and "download" should never all appear in the =
same sentence? http://www.filmindustry.com/article.php?sid=3D440

It's the 25th Anniversary of North America's most important film =
festival and specialty filmmakers are in trouble
If this a Thursday in early September, it must be about time for the =
gala opening of The Toronto International Film Festival. But there is a =
shadow of sorts this year over Toronto. It concerns the plight of the =
so-called "specialty film" and the problem that there appear to be more =
of them on the market now than distributors know what to do with. =
http://www.filmindustry.com/article.php?sid=3D441

Why should the film industry care about the recent MP3.COM ruling?
The ongoing sagas and conflicts of Napster, MP3.com, Gnutella. DivX, =
DeCSS et al are clearly the media issues of this millennial moment. Read =
FilmIndustry.com's reaction. =
http://www.filmindustry.com/article.php?sid=3D443

The stories behind some of Hollywood's casting decisions can be weird =
indeed
http://www.filmindustry.com/article.php?sid=3D437

Who is Caveh Zahedi and why is he telling us all his life story?
http://www.filmindustry.com/article.php?sid=3D436

And much, much more....

We're Hiring! FilmIndustry.com is looking for experienced field =
reporters to cover film industry news and events in their part of the =
