an open letter to AVID... Ladies & Gentleman, I am contacting you today to obtain information regarding the situation I find myself in as the proud owner of two incredibly obsolete AVID systems. Most vendors we deal with will let us in on new product as it nears the closing stages of development, prior to release. We have followed AVIDs development for some years now and have participated in a number of workshops and events where AVID has participated. I find that this latest change in technology has come as a bit of a slap in the face, since we have purchased 2 AVID systems in the past 2 years and our sister campus also has a number of AVID systems. This technology change comes at a critical juncture for us since we are just beginning a lengthy and costly conversion to digital systems. Our situation may not seem very important at your end of the spectrum. However when each and every technology decision is one that not only you and your associates have to live with for some years to come, but also your students; you make them very carefully. With all that said, I find, to my dismay, that AVID has chosen to basically lock out (of an upgrade path) all current users of McXpress products. This information, as I understand it, creates a difficult position for me as a consultant, as a studio supervisor, as an AVID customer (up until now?). Recently (yesterday), I had to advise one of your potential customers, not to rush into buying an AVID. This advice was based on the clearly avoidable situation we find ourselves in at this time. The reason for this note is to encourage and solicit a meeting at NAB with AVID personnel (and anyone else that wants in, including network media!!!). At this meeting I would like to hear what AVID proposes to do for lost souls like myself. Given no other options, I feel a number of fellow users would engage activity in the area of juris prudence to rectify this situation. I will arrive in Las Vegas on 4/19 and am staying at the Flamingo Hilton. You can contact me at this address or via those listed on my vCard (attached). George Lynn Franklin
