I am a college student, and I am looking for the best desktop PC I
can get for under $1000. I have seen ads for Hewlett Packards and
Compaqs for around $650 (with rebates), and I may or may not have the
option of buying a 3 year old Dell (though I don't know how much the
seller is going to ask for it). I am tempted to go with the HP or the
Dell (if the price is right). Any suggestions?

If you can't build your own. Then take this into heart: Most of those cheap-ass computers (cheap-ass price NOT NESSACARALY QUALITY) aren't upgradeable. Most of the time, you will find them to have limited "expantion ports" (ISA, PCI ect.) and very few open drive bays for CDRW's, DVD drives, new hard drives ect. If you just need a simple workstation for WORKING then these computers are fine, they are predominatly internet ready (come w/modems, and all the software) and unlike that 3 year old Dell you have access to, will run all of today's PC software. These computers cut cost's by using the high power, but simplistic Intel Celeron processors, a sound choice for WORK. They do not come with any kind of major Video card power(so forget those 3D accelerated games). They will make your college computing experence plesent, and knowing you didn't need to sell an organ to get one will make things even better, as for those REBATES remember, they lock you into internet service for at least 3 years (I cite:MSN $400 rebate!) Now, this is only good for you if you will be paying for some kind of dialup ISP after purchasing this computer anyway. Good luck!
