Internet Users Consortium - ALERT! Sunday 12/17/95

ALERT! The Communications Decency Act is going to pass unless we voice our
objections to our legislators. If we remain silent, free speech will be
silenced as well.

On December 5 the House of Representatives members of the conference
committee passed an amendment to the Telecommunication Bill that would
criminalize "indecent" material online. The fight to preserve the First
Amendment now moves to the Senate side of the conference committee. In the
previous passage of the Senate version of this bill 84 senators supported
coercive and unconstitutional censorship legislation. No one expects these
public servants to honor their oath to uphold the Constitution.

As public rallies and online protests gear up, civil liberties organizations
are urging YOU to call your Senators and Representatives NOW!
Call as many as you can as often as you can. visit the. The congressional
emails, voice and fax lines can all be found at the Internet Users
Consortium Homepage at: http://www.indirect.com/www/molsen/repmail.html

The Christian Coalition is doing their best to influence each senator and
representative involved in this decision. They have provided their members
with a phone, phone numbers to contact them. The numbers are: 800/962-3524
and 800/972-3524. We can use these numbers as well.

My sources tell me that The American Reporter (the Internet's only daily
newspaper) "threatened on Thursday to deliberately defy the language of
[the] U.S. House cyberporn proposal if it becomes law, calling the measure
a clear violation of the First Amendment." Tens of thousands of individuals and
organizations (including a judge) have promised to break this law.

People are literally lining up to challenge the bill in court should it
pass. One activist changed his signature to read, "II Kings 18:27 (KJV) may
be a Federal offense punishable by 2 years in prison and a $100,000 fine
under provisions of the Telecom Bill." However, it is much easier to stop
legislation before it is passed than to challenge it in the courts. We need
to act out, voice our concerns and defend the freedoms we are being robbed of.

NorthStar keeps you informed and on the lookout for the invasive legislation
the government enforces. If you want to stay informed about this issue and other
such invasive legislation, subscribe to NorthStar. NorthStar is the
bi-weekly e-zine of the Internet Users Consortium that gives you the story
from the perspectives of those who feel the full brunt of government abuse.
Corporate media devalues us in its pro-government portrayal of every news
tidbit. What's left out is how current legislation effects you and I - The
Internet Users. NorthStar is currently examining Key Escrow Encryption, Big
Brother's most frightening surveillance tool since the Telescreen.
