A conventionally parked car in a park and ride takes about 300 sq ft including aisles. If station cars, like the two-seater shown on the Web Site listed below, are parked in queues bumper to bumper, 3.5 can fit in 300 sq ft. As observers of transit realize, many to most park and ride lots fill up before the morning commute period is over so the demand for parking is not met. Station cars in queues provide for that additional parking. Now if 50% of the station cars can be used twice per day, taken home at night by local residents and taken to work during the day by riders who work within a few miles of the station (who before station cars drove all the way to work because they could not get from the station to their work site or because they needed a car during the day) then that 300 sq ft delivers 5.25 round trip riders per day (assuming one person per car). Assume at a given station 500 conventional parking spaces are converted to station car queues. Annual ridership increases from 125,000 (500X250 days/year) to 656,250. If the average transit rider pays $5 per day for a round trip then the annual revenue from the 500 hundred spaces increases from $625 thousand to $3.3 million! There is no other strategy that will increase transit ridership and revenues like this without major capital investments in expansion of the system. -- Marty Bernard Oakland, California ******************************************************* * Station cars are small electric vehicles used for * * access to mass transit stations. * * For information about station cars please visit the * * National Station Car Association's Info Pages at * * http://www.stncar.com * *****************Making EVs Current********************
