I'm sure the guy's insurance company would love to have that video!

No Verizon coverage, but Nextel coverage? Amazing. My wife's company has
to cover that area and when they had Nextel they never had coverage up
there, they all had to carry AT&T or Verizon phones. Sometimes they had
to call the resident to open a gate or call off a dog, and Nextel had no
coverage.

One thing I've found is that my smart phone with no external antenna
will have no signal, while my old dumb phone with an external antenna
(which I've kept activated at $2.50/month) will get enough of a signal
to make a call. Just experienced that last Sunday again down in Muir Woods.

I have a vague memory of being on Skyline in the 1980's, pre-cell phone,
and having something similar happen, a crazy driver going by us at high
speed and later coming upon the car crashed on the side of the road.
Also near Skylonda. Seems like it's irresistible to drive insanely fast
on Skyline.

I wasn't thinking as clearly as I should have; I'll bet I could have
made a call if I'd disabled 3G. The phone the guy was using looked like
one of those yellow "work phones" with PTT. I didn't ask if it was
Sprint/Nextel, but not sure what else it could have been, since we had
AT&T and Verizon covered by the rest of us.

In general, coverage on Skyline has improved by leaps and bounds in the
past two years. They've been putting up a lot of poles (you can see
several of them on 84 that have gone up in just the past 6 months).

I've seen motorcycles come *close* to the speed this guy was going. The
section was one of the longer straightaways, but he'd come off of a
couple of bends. Funny thing, no tire squealing (when he was behind us),
nor did we hear the sound of the crash, even though it was only a a
thousand meters or so ahead. Of course, we're not listening for it; we
were talking among ourselves about the guy's insane speed.
