San Mateo <-> Palo Alto

Hello,

I'm about to move to San Mateo for a shorter commute to work in Palo
Alto. Is it dangerously crazy to ride on 82 (El Camino Real) for that
stretch?

Cheers,
David.

Dangerously crazy? No. I commute from Redwood City to Palo Alto
on El Camino every day.

Is there a better way? Maybe. You might find that you like Old
County (and the other names for that road) and Middlefield Road
better. That was usually the route I took when I lived in San
Mateo.

That's what I did when I lived in San Mateo as well. That was one of my
excursions to go to Palo Alto. I would take Old Country Rd (back then I
could cut through the Bay Meadows (RIP) parking lot and connect with OCR
at the exit. It ends at Redwood City and at that point I would
transverse the railroad tracks and finish up by using ECR. I never tried
using Middlefield though, sounds like that would be a better option then
my cutting over to El Camino.

Middlefield is OK until you get to Palo Alto. In much of Palo
Alto itself, it's a bit narrow for my comfort, so I often switch
to Bryant Street at that point.

I'd opt for ADLP. The only place I've been hit by a vehicle is in San
Mateo, by someone making a right turn in front of me. Hit and run, who
later came back when he realized that I had his license number and had
called the cops. The cops, of course, declined to do anything.

El Camino isn't so bad except for San Mateo itself. Where in San Mateo?

Many like Old County, but if you don't like stopping at red lights,
you'll hate it. They're all times for cross-traffic, and, last time I
rode it, none of them were the type with countdown timers to red, like
they're putting up on El Camino. As a cyclist, I love those countdown
timers. You can tell from a distance if you're going to make it or if
it's time to soft pedal.

From Belmont heading south, I have no real issues with El Camino. It's
not pretty, but it works, and I resent the notion CalTrans sometimes
offers up that El Camino shouldn't be improved for cycling because it's
not a place bikes belong.
