I don't listen to KALW much, but I'm sure that some people
here knew (or knew of) Alan Farley:

I was sorry to hear of his death. He'd been in good health otherwise until
quite recently. Alan was a gentle soul. He had a passion for the arts,
especially music, and found ways to work his favorite composer/performer,
Noel Coward, into the station's schedule one way or another. Alan Farley
was the Voice of KALW (even though some of us remember him from his earlier
stint at KPFA). He embodied the quiet, genteel, personal style that set
KALW apart from other stations.

I knew of him quite well. Listened to "Book Talk" when I lived in the
Bay
Area (he was on just before "Mind Over Matter" on Sunday afternoon)
and
several times, after e-mail exchanges put him onto authors.

I never met Alan Farley personally although we were
hoping he would show up at a book discussion group
I attended pretty regularly at the Bernal Heights
branch of San Francisco Public Library.

He liked biographies and authors.

Two books that I recommended to him which
were not bios that I know he read were
_Equator_ by Thurston Clarke and
_In Patagonia_ by Bruce Chatwin. Both were
descriptions of travel to interesting places
("interesting" in the sense of sometimes horrible!),
the sort of subject that was a natural for SF
radio listeners who wouldn't be caught dead
at Disneyland but probably would dig Santa
Monica Pier. As I recall, he knew about
Chatwin -- the book was already on his
must-read or had-read list. But Clarke was
new for him. He hinted that he might get
to Clarke faster if only I would lend him
my copy and I explained tactfully that
I didn't lend out my books because
I knew from experience that I'd never
see them again. I think SFPL came
to the rescue.
