Well, I finally got the answer I was looking for regard Cumulus and
KGO's "charity" promotions that occur around Christmas time. Cumulus
skims ten percent off the top ("for its own operational expenses"). A
reminder for those without a sense of history, KGO's former owners,
going back at least thirty years, donated 100% of the money they
received to named charities. "Operational expenses" were donated by the
station as their part in giving to the community. Cumulus is no Citadel,
Disney, Cap Cities or even the legacy ABC. Cumulus is scum.
So, if you've a mind to donate ten percent of your charity dollar to
Cumulus, in essence paying their advertising bill to the charities they
are supposedly benefitting, then by all means send your bucks to 55
Hawthorne Street for the Thanksgiving charities, the Christmas tree
lots, and all the other causes from which Cumulus has decided to collect
its own share of the loot.
I really was hoping they were carrying the tradition of community
involvement. When it comes to Cumulus, always assume the worst.

Heh. Aside from the fact that they killed the Golden Goose.

For those who would like to support those charities directly instead
of going through KGO, here are this year's recipients:
Sacred Heart Community Service (San Jose)
St. Anthony Foundation (San Francisco)
St. Vincent DePaul (Oakland)
Trinity Center (formerly Fresh Start) (Walnut Creek)
They're the same four charities that KGO has been supporting for years.
St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Walnut Creek is now running their drop-in
center themselves instead of the Fresh Start organization doing it, so
they've renamed it to Trinity Center. Same clients, same services.

Thank you for the heads up, John! I heard on
KNBR that it's doing an auction tomorrow at
AT&T Park to benefit the the Bay Area Sports
Hall of Fame's youth sports programs. Now it
appears they will get only 90% of the proceeds
from the auction.
