I woke up late because today is a holiday. I turned on the radio at 9AM and heard Pat Thurston saying she's filling in for Ronn Owens who will be back tomorrow. For those of you who are regular listeners, when did Owens mention his new contract? Thank you.

Thank you. Sorry I don't have an answer for that question, Lynn, but FYI, I listened to the last few minutes of his Friday, 12/28 show (the last one before the long holiday weekend, so I thought it might be his goodbye), and he didn't say anything unusual. Just wished everyone a happy new year, as I recall. Patty

Maybe the actual end date of his contract is in January, not 12/31/12. Maybe he's agreed to temporarily work without a contract. Given how pathetic the lineup is on KNBR, maybe they'll re-up him (at less money) and move him onto KNBR, then complete the conversion of KGO into a (not quite) all-news station. I suspect he would add a lot to KNBR in a sports-centric program that can veer into other topics like politics.

What does surprise me about KGO in looking through their daily schedule is how much of the listener call-in talk show format (I should abbreviate that "LCITSF" and pronounce it "ELL-SITT-SIFF") survives. In addition to Ronn Owens, there are Michael Finney, Pat Thurston, Karel, John Hamilton, and Brian Copeland. Collectively, they don't come anywhere near matching the old weeknight line-up, but I wonder if a Cumulus spokesperson would say, "We may be dumb, but we're not stupid." Jim

I'm not sure I understand. KGO actually features the weekend as "all-talk". The five hosts you mentioned by name were part of the former weekend lineup. All of them. So...how do they not "come anywhere near matching the old" lineup? They're the same people! Now if you want to talk about the hourly clock or the clutter level, then you have a valid issue. Also, "Monty" is incredibly weak as a talk host, and he is on both weekend days at the same time each day, probably a lofty status for one who is so incredibly poor as a host. "Headliners on the Headlines" (something I turn off) was on before the Cumulus invasion. However, Pat seems to have migrated from "discussion" to "evangelism", particularly when it comes to firearms...a tune-out for me as well. All it takes is a host to say, "I don't see any reason for ANYONE to have a [evil item here] so Evil Items should be banned", and my radio goes off or to another station. No one is required to justify their need for something for it to be escaped being banned by the government. This attitude that one must justify his need for something appears to be a Bay Area specialty. For what it's worth, the only time I listen to KGO anymore is for the weekend talk (exceptions noted above) and Ronn's daily program. Otherwise, the station is an abortion. -- John Higdon +1 775 253 3838

KGO's listenership has stabilized and is on a par with 910 KKSF. I have totally stopped listening to KGO except for Crime Time during the midnight hours on the weekends because it's really the only show that I enjoy hearing. I've grown tired of Pat Thurston, Brian Copeland, and the rest. Brian is always fishing for topics on his Facebook page, asking questions about inane subjects. I assume he uses the topics that get the most response for his show. I'd listen to Christine Craft if she were on some regular schedule, but that's about it. So, KGO has their audience, KKSF 910 has their audience. I don't see either one growing significantly in the future. And the new KNEW 960 has sunk so low they could probably make a profit shutting the thing off and renting the transmitter site for crabbing.
