NTS MediaOnline Today has confirmed that San Francisco Talk
radio legend Ronn Owens has re-upped with Cumulus Media in
a new multi-year deal that will keep him in KGOs 9am-noon slot
for at least two more years, with an option on a third year.

Amazing. KGO fired the estimable Gil Gross, and kept Owens .( I do
prefer Owens to Karel, but not by much.) And Ray Taliaferro kept me
company through many bouts of insomnia -- a consistent liberal voice
to counterbalance everyone on KSFO, etc.

What happened to the "all-news" idea?

It fell into the hands of supreme incompetents. People who know tell me
that Paul Hosley's dream was to create a threat to KCBS. Ronn's
"contract renewal" indicates that Paul is obviously not being backed up
by the higher ups.

Let me say before I go any further that Ronn is a friend, and I intend
no denigration of his considerable talent. In fact, the continuance of
his show is good news from a personal listening standpoint. That is, of
course, as long as he appears on the radio in person and his slot is not
taken over by substitutes.

But KGO has completely lost its way. Is it a news station or a crippled
talk station? The news is highly repetitive and pretty much sounds like
it is phoned in with regard to presentation. It is technically sloppy,
poorly edited, and sloppily researched. Every single rumor about a
recent sensational national story I heard first on KGO, all of which
were ultimately debunked after fact checking...which KGO should have
done in the first place.

The talk hosts (with the exception of Ronn) have become stale and lazy.
The gun-a-thon has gone on a couple of weeks too long. There are three
hosts I've stopped listening to altogether for their stridency,
condescending attitude toward callers, or their three-word phrase
presentation of an annoying immature attitude. Any host who implies that
anyone (especially callers and listeners) who disagrees with their
simplistic, emotionally driven viewpoint is stupid or evil is not going
to be heard by my ears. I'm older, and apparently far wiser, and do not
need to listen to such garbage.

KGO's clutter level is outrageous. The slavish adherence to the clutter
clock removes one of the salient advantages of being "live and local".
Syndicated shows have to do stict timing; local shows do not. However,
someone at Cumulus believes that everything must grind to a halt so that
the clutter and noise can spew rather than realize that the tune-out
stuff can actually wait a couple of minutes without the world ending.

"Newstalk 910" has a great opportunity to clean KGO's clock, but it has
problems of its own. That station also has too much clutter as well, and
it really needs a better signal. It also has infomercials which reveals
an incompetent and lazy sales department. But...taking over where KGO is
within its grasp. I just wish someone would take the ball and run with
it.

In a year when San Francisco may have two championship
sports teams, the wizards at KNBR have gone to gawd-awful
national programming (ESPN) starting at 10 pm, which
is pretty much exactly when I would start listening
to sports talk radio, if it were local. Another Cumulus
misfire.

I feel the same way about KGO. I often listen to the radio
for a while before I go to sleep. The Bloomberg business
news on KGO at that time isn't anything that will keep me
listening for more than 30 seconds unless they happen to
be in a story that really interests me when I dial by.

When the Giants play, KNBR does a midnight rerun of the entire game. I'd
much rather hear play by play than hear endless speculation from talkshow
hosts about a team. I've become a BIG fan of Giants baseball these past 3-4
years because of the play-by-play, not because of the back-fence idle
chatter talkshows.

I actually like some of the stuff that comes out of Bloomberg, but it's
the NYC-local feed that begins at 2am out here. (I have a weird sleep
schedule.) It's like DX'ing WBBR (an impossibility out here, if for no
other reason than their 50kW pattern points the juice north and east
from NYC), which before Bloomberg bought it was the iconic WNEW/1130,
one of the stations I grew up with. But as a programming choice, it's
wildly inappropriate for a west coast flamethrower like KGO.

BTW, Bradley, ESPN went to 95.7 not too long ago. What you're now
hearing after 10pm is CBS Sports Radio. Cumulus is a partner in that
endeavor, which is why it's being forced down the throat of KNBR.

Thanks. I wouldn't know about the change because I stopped
listening to KNBR at night some time ago.
