station. Yep...by one hour per week. KKSF would do even better if it 
would jettison those weekend infomercials.

I was giving KKSF the benefit of the doubt on two fronts. The first is 
the notion that the station's boast is concerning hosted talk programs, 
not a news wheel. If you consider a news wheel "talk", then both KGO and 
KCBS are clearly more "live and local".

The second pass (which I actually gave both KGO and KKSF) was to count a 
local show done remotely (A&G, Karel) as live and local. Actually, if 
A&G are heard in Sacramento at the same time as Oakland, then it is 
technically syndication and not "live and local".

Without A&G, KKSF's claim to be "the most live and local station" in The 
Bay Area is clearly nonsense. And we haven't even mentioned KLIV!

I agree. They also tend to run the same stories, with those same annoying
ads. But then again, that in itself is a another seperae thread of its own. 

 Without A&G, KKSF's claim to be "the most live and local station" in The Bay Area is clearly nonsense. And we haven't even mentioned KLIV! 

Also, none of the FM non-comms/college stations, e.g. KALX, KPOO, KFJC, KPFA, KKUP, KSJS, KZSU, KALW, + a host of others between Sonoma/Marin, and the Greater Bay Area are considered in this somewhat sprurious claim, IMO.

I don't know whether they've changed their tagline since you posted
your original comment, or whether you didn't hear the whole thing,
but it's currently something like, "The most live and local talk in
the Bay Area." So they are careful to differentiate themselves from
news stations.

I don't know whether A&G are heard at the same time in both cities,
but KKSF is including them in the promo's list of live-and-local
talent. But wouldn't it be syndication any time that a program is 
carried in multiple cities, no matter what the timing?

Me? I'd consider Sacto their home market. 

Are those their only two stations? If so, then I wouldn't ding KKSF
too much for calling them "local"; 100 miles away isn't so far. IMO,
it would be a different situation if they were broadcasting from LA.
Then I'd consider them interlopers, not locals. :-)

Do they talk about the Bay Area much? I mean, other than comments
like, "Those crazy liberals in the Bay Area"? Do they address Bay
Area issues? If not, that would tip the balance more towards "not
local" for me.

They also simulcast on a Modesto talk/sports station, KWSX 1280 (in bygone 
days the old KJOY and later KJAX).  They're also on KION 1460/101.something 
in Salinas/Monterey.  So, they're regional.

I'll answer. I actually listen to the show (via podcast format, but that 
doesn't really matter).

They are trying to build themselves out as a California show. For the 
past few years their core stations have been KSTE and KKSF (KNEW when 
they started on 910). For a long time, they were 6-10a on both. But when 
Rush consolidated a bunch of affiliates to Clear Channel properties, 
they lost 9-10 on KKSF. Somewhere during that time they were also on 2 
stations in Stockton and Salinas. I'm not sure of the call signs. They 
would bounce between stations and sometimes would be in separate 
studios. You could tell just by the sound and then one of them would 
talk about traffic getting into or out of SF.

The show has always been a blend of Northern California, state politics, 
national politics and current news and pop culture. They don't cover a 
local shooting or election unless it's of broad appeal. That's where 
they differ from John and Ken in L.A. J&K can be broad but will get 
very, very local into Southern California topics like the killing of a 
homeless guy in Fullerton, for example.

Last year, they were hinting that they were trying to expand. A&G 
dragged it out quite awhile. It seemed that they were going to be on 
either Fresno or Bakersfield. In the end, it was a surprise that their 
next live (not delayed) station would be KFMB in San Diego. They said 
they were trying to be a California show (plus whatever is topical, in 
general), but the appeal clearly has to cross many locales. They say 
they're still working on getting into Fresno.

With regard to the "After Show," it's a spinoff show that was an 
experiment as a podcast that the two producers and the board op did for 
a few months. It caught on and they gave them a 10-11 live daily slot on 
KSTE with "best of" from 11-12. It seems it was worth the risk to the 
station boot Clark Howard off 10-12, at least temporarily.
