So, nearly half of the threads on ba.food these days are about drinking, and several folks (lurkers and regs, both) have expressed by email the wish that those silly boozy threads would just go away. I think there is demonstrated interest, particularly in light not only of the number of drunks like myself in ba.* but also of the number of wine-country enquiries. Consequently, I'd like to suggest a ba.* group dedicated to the hard stuff. I don't have strong feelings about the name, except that I hate the rec.food.drink model and would prefer something that is a sibling to ba.food. What do y'all think? Rone? Ba.food added back in to followups. I can read replies in either. Well, I'd certainly be interested in participating in any such group, but I am wondering why people who aren't interested in reading about, say, bourbon or aperitifs or the wine country are doing reading threads with said titles. I mean, I'm not particularly interested in random South Bay or Peninsula restaurant reviews since I neither live nor work down there, but I just zap the threads that look like they're about them. For me, it's part of the dining experience usually - I don't want to feel obligated in some way to discuss the food one place and the wine or bar in another. And sometimes going out for drinks (and maybe some nice snacky things) is fun. (Actually the only time I was in Masa's was with some women friends, at the bar. The cocktails were not the greatest I have had, but the price was good and the bartender comped us a round.) I like the give and take in ba.food. Mind you, I think any "spinoff" would probably be interesting, but at the end of the day I'm wondering if this is a split that needs to happen. Even with all the tangential threads, ba.food isn't a terribly voluminous group anyway. And I find the variety interesting. Anyway, I don't see why drinks don't fit under the ba.food umbrella. And I really don't think there would be enough interest for a separate group, seeing as how these thread clusters tend to ebb and flow. Chester

On second thought, I kind of agree. booze isn't really a regional thing, and even the ba.wineries aren't discussed much here, either. A rare, polite cross-post to be.general and ba.food doesn't attract much attention. I hear ba.wineries spoekn of more in other regional food groups. OTOH, I would like to find the 12-year old 100 proof Canadian Club that has only been spotted at the duty-free shops in LA and SF airports. I'd also like to find Rock and Rye. It has large peices of fruit in the bottle (how do they get that in there, anyway? Dehydrated, perhaps?). It's a drink I remember from my childhood. And the _best_ Belgian Ale selection in the ba.* is at 41st Ave Liquors in Capoitola. Over 25 kinds, at last count, and they have the newer Delirium Noctorum there, too (from Huyghe - The infamous Pink Elephant). Unibrou has just released a trippel, something like "Deuce de Deu" here in the states, but it's not quite as good as La Fin du Monde (you may find that at Whole Foods). Now that I've got that out of my system (at 1oz per hour), I probably would not subscribe to ba.booze. It would ruin my reputation if I were seen posting there too often <cough>. -sw

A group purely devoted to alcoholic beverages might be a good idea. Wine with food is one thing, but perhaps someone wants to discuss setting up a still, or merely mock Gordon Biersch's swill. These probably lie outside of ba.food's scope (unless you'd also like to mock GB's food). However, i'm undecided. So i leave it up to you, the ba.foodies and other interested parties, to sway me. In any case, I like Ms. O'Mara's notion of including bar humor in the charter. Why, I'm reminded of that hilarious joke about the three thirsty strings that go into a ba#%$&### NO CARRIER

(arggh, Sancho, you posted AND emailed me!)
I can't find a charter for ba.food; the only newgroup archived at
ftp.isc.org is bodyless and was issued in 1992.
Anyway, nobody's sprung forward with gifts, so, in my fickle grandeur,
i'm going to decline ba.{liquid-repast}. If ba.food readers consider
the volume too high, well, la-de-da. Where are all those people now?

Ooh, ba.bodyless -- I like it! Snodfart's not picking it
up though; I'll have to Have A Word with Russki.

Danged if I know -- they had their chance. I pitched the
ball for 'em, it's their problem if they flinched away and/or
took wild swings. Now back to our usual delightful badinage.

If you're talking about me, which I doubt but I'll blather on anyway, I
liked the sound of ba.booze, but that's about it. I figure anything we
can put in our mouths (to eat, silly) is game for discussion here.
But I've never thought the booze discussion level was too high.
