Mr. Necati Celik, who is one of the greatest living masters of the
oud, is on a tour of California. His trip is being sponsored by the
Turkish American Association of California.
Oud is an instrument that dates back to antiquity. It is primarily used
in the Middle Eastern music. In the West, it evolved into two new
instruments during the middle ages: Lute and the guitar.

NECATi CELiK was born and educated in Konya, the home of the Mevlevi
order. Mr. Celik's first instrument was the baglama, the ubiquitous
long-necked lute of Turkey. At the age of sixteen, he started playing
oud,
developing his command of the instrument by studying with some of the
country's best oud masters. Since 1973, he has played for the annual
Mevlana rituals. In 1985, he was one of the founding members of the
Music
Department of Konya Seljuk University, teaching oud there for a year.
He
has been a m ember of the Ministry of Culture's Istanbul State
Classical
Music Ensemble since 1986, and was the primary oud artist with the
Necdet
Yasar Ensemble, touring frequently with them in Europe and the United
States.
Necati Celik has been coming to California for the last three summers
and
teaching oud to the students in the San Francisco Bay Area and
participating to the Mendecino Near Eastern Music Camp, and playing at
the
concerts organized in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Monterey, Stanford
and
Santa Cruz.
