It's been very fun starting this up, especially with some
unsolicited-but-welcomed help from James.  I have pictures at
http://pics.livejournal.com/serenejournal/gallery/0001g44c , but
mainly I just wanted to thank all of you for your advice.

Oh, and here's what I planted (left to right and top to bottom, with
top being north in a 4'x4' box):

9 onions
