Wanted to let you know about an interesting event at The Booksmith in
San Francisco on Friday, March 13 at 7 pm.

As F. Scott Fitzgerald defined the Jazz Age - so Douglas Coupland is
defining Generation X.

Douglas Coupland, famed depicter of late 20th Century pop culture, will
be reading from his latest novel, "Girlfriend in a Coma." (The title is
borrowed from the sometimes morose, sometimes ironic Britpop band The
Smiths.) "Girlfriend in a Coma" (hardback, $24.00) tells the story of a
woman, Karen, who goes into a coma in 1979 and remains comatose for 18
years. She awakens into a very different world - the 1990's.

"Karen's comas in the book has to do with my life-long obsessionwith
comas and their 'time travel' aspect as wellthe viscerally weird story
of Karen Ann Quinlan. Comas are really peculiar to the late 20th
Century. Before, say, 1960, people who might have gone into a coma
simply died. Comas are more modern than plastics or TV. I like the
notion that comas can allow a person to radically re-invent themselves
upon awakening. I think we all want to do that - radically alter
ourselves - I thiink it's our deepest need." Douglas Coupland.

Coupland is the acclaimed author of "Generation X," "Shampoo Planet,"
"Life After God," "Microserfs" and "Polaroids from the Dead." If you
can't amke this event and would like to order a signed book, email us at
