If anybody has experience managing a mySQL database with phpMyadmin, I'd be
very greatful for some help.

I recently installed phpMyadmin on a linux box running mysql and php4 to
administer the database. The root user was configured to have all privileges
and connect from localhost. Only the mysql database exists at present. When
I try to connect to this database using phpMyadmin I keep getting the
following error message:

Warning: MySQL Connection Failed: Can't connect to local MySQL server
through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (111) in lib.inc.php on line 125
Error

I can't figure out what I am doing wrong, I can connect and do all
administrative tasks throught the shell.

Can anyone please help?

Its failing to connect to the database, check the username and
password in config.inc.php

I presume MySQL is running.

Your MySQL Daemon isn't running....

Try /pathtomysqldir/bin/safe_mysqld &
this the mysql.sock file will be created......

If it doesn't work, let me know...

I am having the exact same problem. If you find any information I would
be greatful if you would share it with me. I have confirmed that MySql
is actually running and I still get this error. I am starting to wonder
if I configured PHP wrong when I compiled it. It acts as if PHP just
doesn't recognize any MySql commands at all.
